The Victorian Government has crossed an ethical line, embracing a culture of death with the passing of the dangerous assisted suicide bill in the Legislative Council. This is the first time any Australian state has legalised both assisted suicide and euthanasia. With the Victorian election to be held in late 2018, many Victorians will be seeking assurances from candidates that they will repeal this dangerous legislation if they are elected.

  • The Victorians: Art and Culture - Professor Richard J. Evans

The Victorian age began as an age of realism, in literature and art, and of nationalism and romanticism in music and culture. By the end of the century, however, the high noon of Victorian culture was starting to give way to more disturbing developments - the disintegration of musical tonality, the emergence of abstract art, the eruption of the 'primitive' into cultural styles and the arrival of modernism onto the artistic scene. This lecture examines the characteristics of Victorian culture and the reasons for its decline. The transcript and downloadable versions of the lecture are available from the Gresham College website: http://www.gresham.ac.uk/lectures-and-events/the-victorians-art-and-culture Gresham College has been giving free public lectures since 1597. Transcript: * OK, imagine you’re an unmarried lady out for a stroll in 19th-century London. First of all, you better not be alone. That’s right: You need an escort. But what happens if you see a man you recognize? Well, first of all, he’s not allowed to talk to you unless you make a gesture of recognition first. Which, OK, I can kind of see the appeal of that one – you don’t have to pretend to be doing something on your phone to avoid making eye contact, etc. But let’s say you really want to stop and talk to this guy: Well... you can’t. Or at least you shouldn’t. If you want to talk to him, instead of stopping, you can offer him your hand, which he can take, but only _after_ lifting his hat, using the hand farthest away from you. Once he takes your hand, he has to walk along with you, but even then you can’t just gab away. According to _Cassell’s Household Guide_, "Strict reticence of speech and conduct should be observed in public." That means no "loud talking" or "animated discussions." And if you see a gentleman you’d like to speak to, but he’s smoking a cigar, tough luck. It is amazingly rude for a man to smoke in the presence of a woman, so if you acknowledge him, he’ll have to put out his cigar, and for all you know it might have been a really expensive cigar, and now you’ve just ruined his morning. Nice work, Myrtle. * Do you ever have that problem where you want to date the neighbor’s daughter but you don’t know if she’s technically “on the market” yet, or if her parents still consider her a child? No? Good! Because that’s amazingly creepy! Fortunately, the Victorians had a formalized system for avoiding this problem: Presentation at court. If you were a respectable family who wanted to announce that your son or daughter was ready for courtship -- which is basically dating, minus all the fun, plus a lot of conversations with chaperones to determine if young men were predisposed to “base amusements” -- you could do this at a specialized event. Young men could be introduced at events called “levees,” which were held several times a year. Young ladies could be introduced at presentation events held at St. James Palace – and these events didn’t skimp on the pomp and protocol either. Men had to wear buckled shoes and swords. Ladies had to stick tall feathers in their hair and drag 3-yard trains behind their dresses. But once the kids are ready to start dating, that’s when the etiquette fangs really sink in: * Lots of parents get weirdly strict and judgmental when their kids start dating, but Victorian England really took it to another level. First of all, etiquette manuals of the time advised young lovers that, technically, you’re _supposed_ to look for partners only within your own social class, because we all know how awkward it is when you’re a Baroness and you’re trying to chat up a nice Viscount, and his mother is just right over there on the fainting couch looking at you with eyes that say, “Trash.”

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Nizarala’s presentation reflects upon society’s absorption of prefabricated culture — music, paintings, sculptures, movies, books, fashion and products of creativity that are part of our daily lives. Yet, despite available resources to create music or paintings, people don’t express themselves as much as they could. Why do we prefer to absorb something created by others? Is there a lack of incentives to create products from our own inventive minds? Is there an absence of spaces that stimulate creation of new cultures? At Burning Man, possibilities and experimentation gain life and people feel free to express themselves. What if everyone could experiment how it feels to be free to be yourself and do what you want? In places like Burning Man, we can set our own rules and stop playing the roles society inflicts on us. Burning Man’s desert setting serves as a blank canvas where new cultures are recognized and new things are created and exposed. If we had more venues like Burning Man in our cities, and more events that stimulated and invited self-expression, we wouldn’t have a passive population that only absorbs culture. Instead, people would be able to contribute, and we would have a richer environment. Victoria Nizarala is an architecture and urbanism junior at Universidade Federal da Bahia in Bahia, Brazil. She previously studied in Berkeley, Calif., and currently participates in a one-year exchange program to study architecture at NYIT. In August, she worked on an installation at the 2014 Burning Man Festival in Reno, NV. About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar founded The Art of Living as an international, non-profit, educational and humanitarian organization in 1982. Its educational and self-development programs offer powerful tools to eliminate stress and foster a sense of well-being through powerful breathing techniques such as Sudarshan Kriya and Yoga. Appealing not only to a specific population, these practices have proven effective globally at all levels of society. What is Yoga? The secret to health and happiness lies deep within every human. Yoga is the science of discovering one's own self - the very source of pure consciousness, peace and bliss. Everyone knows that we don't feel good and we get stressed when there is disharmony in our lives, when our bodies are tired and our busy minds constantly chatter and judge. Through the discipline of Yoga we become more aware of ourselves by doing simple postures, breathing techniques, meditation, and relaxation to rejuvenate the body and quite the mind. It is in this manner that we cultivate harmony in ourselves. What is Meditation? Settling the surface mind is meditation. Living in the present is meditation. Relaxing deeply is meditation. When you are really happy, reposing in love, you are meditating. Meditation is that space when the thoughts have subsided, and the mind is in complete rest. What is Sudarshan Kriya? Sudarshan Kriya incorporates specific natural rhythms of the breath which harmonize the body, mind and emotions. This unique breathing technique eliminates stress, fatigue and negative emotions such as anger, frustration and depression, leaving you calm yet energized, focused & yet relaxed. It increases energy, improves intuition and makes you innovative. Millions around the world have done this unique practice and have reported better quality of life. Professional and amateur theatre and dance companies perform in historical playhouses, modern arts centres and small, picturesque community theatres. Victoria is proud to be the home of the acclaimed Pacific Opera Victoria. Art Galleries: Both Victoria and Vancouver Island are home to numerous art galleries, exhibits and studios. You can walk from gallery to gallery in Victoria's downtown core or drive the country roads to visit artisans' studios. Paintings, prints, sculptures, glass, wood and pottery can all be found and the traditional art of the First Nations peoples is widespread throughout the Island. Music: Music for all tastes fills local concert halls, cathedrals, nightclubs and pubs. The Victoria Symphony entertains audiences throughout the year. The highlight of its season, and a Victoria tradition, is the Victoria Symphony Splash: a by-donation concert performed from a barge in the Inner Harbour to over 40,000 people. Festivals: Music and arts festivals throughout the summer and across the Island celebrate jazz, blues, R&B, folk, independent film, Shakespeare, fringe theatre, comedy and Victoria's cultural diversity. Buskers and street performers add colour to Victoria's streets and Inner Harbour.

This tradition continues today with all of our five or so public lectures a week being made available for free download from our website. http://www.gresham.ac.uk
